About Me

Drake Bartolai

Chicago, IL · drakeab2@illinois.edu

I'm Drake, a computer engineering student at the University of Illinois. During my days I like to write code for my various projects, play basketball and golf, and read about anything.

Brief Story

I've been tutoring privately for six years, mostly students preparing for the ACT and SAT. Last summer I also taught at a coding summer camp, working with students at a wide range of levels. The work has shaped how I think about teaching. I've come to believe that most students don't need more half-hearted practice; they need someone who gets their learning style and helps them succeed.

Outside of tutoring, I build software for school and for fun. You can find some of my engineering work on my projects page. I really enjoy working on things that I can actually use, so I always have a few ideas that I'm excited to get started on.

What I'm Working On

Most of my time goes to ceria, the platform I built for my tutoring practice. It handles the administrative side of working with students (diagnostics, assignments, scheduling, progress tracking, etc.) so I can focus on the teaching itself.

This semester some of my course projects also include a GPU-accelerated order book visualizer for the web, a Tetris game on an FPGA board, and a Large Language Model from scratch.
